Background

Small-scale fishery communities in Thailand play a vital ecological and social role, but face mounting threats including due to unclear tenure arrangements, economic pressures, and climate change. At this event organized for Bangkok Climate Action Week (BCAW), a community participatory video created in Baan Yaimom village, Trat Province will be screened and discussed. The film was created with residents from Baan Yaimom village, who helped document their histories, spatial practices, and legal struggles. The video, together with a community storybook, shows how communities can make their “invisible rights” visible asserting customary claims and collective knowledge. 

The research that created the community participatory video and storybook has been prepared through the Just Futures Mekong Fellowship Program. This interdisciplinary fellowship and research programme emphasizes co-produced knowledge grounded in the lived experience of community members to inform policy that supports grassroots-led climate adaptation. The panel discussion at this event will connect community and civil society experience with participatory research approaches, and broader issues of policy, climate change, and socio-economic transformation to collectively identify  ways forward that are sustainable and socially just in Thailand and beyond.

“A capacity strengthening and research fellowship program that will support young individuals to address pressing environmental and social challenges”

First round call for applicants from China to be located in Thailand is open until 25th August 2024 (23:59 GMT+7)

The ‘Just Futures Mekong Fellowship Program’ is a capacity strengthening and research program launched in July 2024 that supports young individuals to address pressing environmental and social challenges through research, collaboration, and regional dialogue. The current themes of the fellowship program encompasses: organic farming and agroecology; coastal community resource governance; community based tourism; and climate change, including farmer climate adaptation and climate finance.

By engaging with scholars, civil society, policymakers, and other actors, the ‘Just Futures Mekong Fellowship Program’ aims to create a comprehensive and transformative experience that empowers fellows to make a meaningful and lasting impact advancing just sustainability in the Mekong Region, build networks and collaborations, contribute towards collaborators’ missions, and support fellows to further their career and personal aspirations.

The ‘Just Futures Mekong Fellowship Program’ entails the following:

  • Training & Solidarity: The fellowship begins with a pre-arrival online orientation program and then in-person workshops with CSDS at Chulalongkorn University, equipping Fellows with essential skills for research and working in a multi-cultural context.

  • Placement: Fellows are located in a six-month placement with a host organization, working alongside colleagues in the organization and contributing to impactful projects.

  • Co-produced knowledge: Fellows co-create knowledge and solutions through a research project guided by an experienced mentor, addressing critical sustainability challenges.

  • Futures Thinking: Aligned with the Chulalongkorn University UNESCO Chair in Resource Governance and Futures Literacy, Fellows will build futures literacy to envision and shape sustainable futures.

  • Policy Impact: Fellows contribute to real-world change by informing policy-making processes, advocating for sustainable practices, and inspiring further research.

The first call for fellows is presently open to participants from China to undertake a fellowship in Thailand. Subsequent calls will open to other nationalities and collaborators across the region.
